A teaching plug-in rather than a chapter, and the question mark is load-bearing. The first three industrial revolutions were named in hindsight, by people who could already see what had changed. This room asks whether robots, artificial intelligence and the humans working alongside them amount to a fourth — the new 21st-century frontier — or whether that is a claim being made about the present by people with something to sell. Claim and counterclaim, evidence both ways, the same as every other hall. The room is entered by corridor from six Social Science Museum halls, each arriving at the question from a different lesson: the mills, the steam threshold, the plant that closed, the women who worked the first machines, the study that measured people at work, and the tariff. A student who walks in from The New Mills is asking a different question from one who walks in from The Factory Closes, and both are the right question.
