The Problem, Stated

Engineering does not begin with a solution. It begins with a sentence: what is wrong, for whom, and how would we know it was fixed. A wobbling chair, a bridge that sways, a valve that sticks. The student who cannot write the sentence cannot start the work — and most failed designs are failures of the sentence, not the mathematics.

Constraints Are the Design

Cost, weight, time, material, safety, law. A design with no constraints is a daydream; a design with constraints is engineering. This panel lists the constraints of five real objects in the building and asks which single constraint shaped each one most — the answer is rarely the obvious one.

Three Designs, One Job

Possible solutions are plural. The bench holds three ways to join two pieces of wood, three ways to span a gap, three ways to lift a load. Each works. Each costs something different. Choosing between them — with a reason you can say out loud — is the whole discipline.

Make It Better, Prove It

Iteration is the engine: measure, change one thing, measure again. Change two things and you have learned nothing, because you cannot say which one did it. This is the same discipline the K-6 bench trains with Three Tries, arriving here with a load cell attached.

The Factor of Safety

Engineers do not build to the load they expect. They build to the load they expect multiplied by a number — and that number is a moral document. It records how certain we are, and how much we would lose if we were wrong. Elevators carry a factor of eleven. Ask why.

When It Fell Down

Tacoma Narrows, the Hyatt Regency walkway, the de Havilland Comet. Every one taught engineering something it could not have learned by succeeding. This wall is not about blame; it is about the fact that a discipline which hides its failures stops learning.
