“You learned who you are by watching what other people reflected back at you. The mirror, it turns out, was people all along.”

“Space is not the stage the story happens on - it is one of the actors. Ask WHERE, and half the mystery answers itself.”

“The self is a conversation: the I speaking, the Me listening with everyone else's ears. You rehearse society every time you think.”

The Ledger at Grandview
A mile of rock cut open by a river. Every band is a page: limestone from a sea, sandstone from dunes, shale from a mud flat. The bottom pages are nearly two billion years old; the top are 270 million.
Hutton's Unconformity
A shore in Scotland where grey rock stands on end and red rock lies flat on top of it. In 1788 James Hutton brought two friends here by boat and showed them: the grey was laid down, folded upright, worn flat, and then the red was laid across it. 'The mind seemed to grow giddy by looking so far into the abyss of time.'
Jack Hills, from Orbit
A stretch of dry hills in Western Australia seen from a satellite. In a ridge of sandstone here, geologists found zircon crystals dated to 4.4 billion years - older than any rock on Earth, washed out of a crust that no longer exists.
The Stone Older Than Earth
The same slice that hangs in the Forge, hung here as the ledger's first entry: a stone that condensed before the Earth, the opening balance every later page is measured against.
