The Suit, Opened

Fourteen Layers
The suit is a laminate: an inner comfort layer, a cooling garment threaded with water tubing, a pressure bladder, a restraint layer to stop the bladder ballooning, insulation, and an outer shell against micrometeoroids. Each layer answers one problem.

The Apollo suits were built by seamstresses from a company that made brassieres, working to a 1/64-inch tolerance without pins — a pin-hole is a leak. Craft skill won the contract over aerospace engineering.
The Cooling Garment
A person working hard inside a sealed shell would cook in their own heat. Ninety metres of fine tubing against the skin carries water to a sublimator that dumps the heat to vacuum as ice.
The Backpack Is the Spacecraft
Oxygen, carbon-dioxide scrubbing, power, water cooling, and radio — seven hours of life on the shoulders. Opened, it reads as a plumbing diagram, which is exactly what it is.
Pressure Is the Enemy and the Point
Too little and the blood boils; too much and the suit becomes a rigid balloon nobody can bend. The compromise sits near 4.3 psi of pure oxygen — low enough to move in, high enough to live.
Dust Was the Unsolved Problem
Lunar dust is sharp, statically charged and abrasive. It cut seals, jammed joints and would not brush off. Every future surface suit is designed around a problem the Apollo suits met and did not beat.
